I have always found the wines coming from the Gibbston Valley sub region in Central Otago interesting and elegant. The fruit is the last into the winery, it is 100% handpicked and come up in small bins in a refridgerated truck. It gets a good start on the cold soaking process during the journey up to Marlborough! 


This wine has this beautiful, seamless texture and bright red fruit and acid core that I associate with Gibbston wines. Aromas of cherry, plum and spice are complemented by powerful tannins and a savoury, textured mid palate. Cellar up to 10 years.

WINEMAKERS NOTE

VITICULTURE
Vineyard: 100% Willowflat Vineyard, Awatere Valley
The block comprises of a North facing slope that has an altitude of 180 metres above sea level. The soils are free draining river gravels with a top loess layer. The vines yielded 4.5 Tonnes / hectare and comprise of Dijon clones 113, 114 and 667.

WINEMAKING

Harvest Date: 5 May 2016
Winemaking Analysis: Alc 14% pH 3.92 TA 5.0 RS 1.6g/l
Upon arrival to the winery, the fruit was destemmed and continued to cold soak for 5 days. For fermentation, the parcel was warmed and inoculated with a select yeast to enhance varietal character. Regular hand plunging has helped to craft a wine with elegance and balance. The wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barriques, 30% of which were new. The blend was lightly filtered prior to bottling.

"Medium to deep red/purple colour, bright and youthful. Attractive perfume of sandalwood, toasty and spicy, fragrant red fruits and quite sappy. Quite a classy wine, soft and balanced, fine and understated, with delicacy and charm galore. Quite pointed acidity, though. Also has intensity and length. A surprising wine."

This is such an impressive Gibbston Pinot, showing fresh, meaty, dense, spicy red cherry and berry fruit, with real freshness and a silky texture. It’s just so beautiful, with lots of aromatic interest and real palate presence. 95/100
