Our Seaview Vineyard in the Awatere Valley is New Zealand's most coastal vineyard. Here our vines battle against the elements producing small berries with thick skins and wonderfully rich and intense flavours.

Our Yealands Estate Pinot Gris is brimming with concentrated notes of poached pears and melon, with underlying flavours of quince and a touch of ginger. The palate is full-bodied and luscious, showing wonderful balance between texture, fruit weight and mineral acidity, with a long dry finish.

VINTAGE SUMMARY
Marlborough experienced a mild-to-cool spring period, which ensured that the vines naturally produced lighter than average yields. These mild temperatures then extended into the summer months, coupled with an unseasonal period of rain, which ultimately alleviated the drought conditions we had experienced over the past two years. The Pinot Gris from this vintage has crisp mineral acidity balanced with plush pear and quince aromas.

VITICULTURE
Our Seaview Vineyard in the Awatere Valley is exposed to some of the toughest growing conditions in Marlborough; high sunshine and wind, cool nights and low rainfall which produces a smaller, thicker skinned berry with intense fruit flavours. This Pinot Gris is made blocks E6 and E7, which are located on a sheltered north facing slope, within the Seaview Vineyard. This pocket gives us luscious ripe pear and quince aromas that makes this wine so alluring.

WINEMAKING
Winemaker: Natalie Christensen
Harvest Date: 2nd April and 11th April 2017
Winemaking Analysis: Alc 13% pH 3.23 TA 5.9 RS 4.1g/l
The two blocks were harvested a week apart in early April. The fruit was de-stemmed then pressed gently prior to cold settling for 72 hours. A portion (30%) was racked directly to older French barriques to undergo fermentation. The balance was racked to a small stainless steel tank and fermented separately using a selected yeast. A long cool fermentation followed. The parcels were then kept on lees for a period of two months, with the barrels being stirred twice weekly to build texture and structure. The wine was then blended, stabilised and filtered prior to bottling.

Product Reviews

Decanter

Made by winemaker Tamra Kelly-Washington, this is a pungent style of Pinot Gris with notes of apricot and quince on the nose. The palate is elegant and fresh, with flavours of watermelon and a pinch of ginger spice.

2012 Sommelier Wine Awards
United Kingdom 5 January 2012

"The richness allied with subtle aromatics made this a versatile By the Glass winner. Likely to appeal because of its elegance, equally its texture and clean tropical fruit flavours give it the credentials to match white meat and fish dishes, Californian salads and lightly spiced Thai recipes".

Michael Coopers Buyer's Guide
New Zealand1 January 2012

“Estate-grown in the Awatere Valley, the vintage is mouthfilling and vibrantly fruity, with rich, citrusy, peachy flavours, a slightly oily texture and a dryish, long finish. 4 Stars”
