Our Seaview Vineyard in the Awatere Valley is New Zealand's most coastal vineyard. Here our vines battle against the elements producing small berries with thick skins and wonderfully rich and intense flavours.

A blend of Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer, this intense aromatic wine is brimming with concentrated notes of lychee and pear, with underlying flavours of lime and mandarin, with a touch of spice and ginger. The palate shows good fruit concentration, and a wonderful balance between texture, fruit weight and acidity, with a bright citrus finish.

VINTAGE SUMMARY: The growing season in Marlborough started out warm and dry, resulting in very even flowering and ultimately balanced vines with the right amount of crop to get them through to harvest. The warm weather continued through Spring and Summer, with periodic rains which kept the vines hydrated through the warm growing season. The warmer conditions meant that harvest started around two weeks earlier than the previous year, with fruit that was full of flavour, naturally balanced acidity and lovely weight.

VITICULTURE: Our Seaview Vineyard in the Awatere Valley is exposed to some of the toughest growing conditions in Marlborough; high sunshine and wind, cool nights and low rainfall which produces a smaller, thicker skinned berry with intense fruit flavours. The cool site regularly commences harvest up to one week later than other sub-regions. All three of these aromatic varieties sit on sheltered, north facing slopes. The soil is predominantly windblown loess.

Varieties: Pinot Gris 51% Riesling 31% Gewürztraminer 18%

Individual parcels of Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer, were selected and harvested separately. The fruit was then crushed, de-stemmed and gently pressed off to settle in separate stainless steel tanks. These tanks were settled for 72hrs and then the clear juice was racked off to another tank for a long, cool fermentation to enhance and capture the pure fruit flavours. Once fermentation was completed, the wine was racked, blended, stabilised and filtered before bottling.

An adventurous 50% Pinot Gris/35% Riesling/15% Gewurztraminer blend created by winemaker Tamra Washington. Fresh pears and exotic summer fruits on the nose, while the Riesling provides a lift of acidity on the finish.

I also loved a Yealands Estate PGR 2013 I tasted recently; from New Zealands' Awatere Valley, it's a blend of pinot gris, gewurztraminer and riesling. It has a zippy freshness that gewurztraminer on its own tends to lack, but still has that exotic character that makes it work so well with thai food and other curries.
