VINTAGE: The growing season in Marlborough started out warm and dry, resulting in even flowering and ultimately balanced vines with the right amount of crop to get them through to harvest. The warm weather continued through Spring and Summer, with periodic rains which kept the vines hydrated throughout the growing season. These warmer conditions also meant harvest started around two weeks earlier than the previous year, with fruit that was full of flavour, naturally balanced acidity and lovely weight. Our S1 Sauvignon Blanc parcel was picked at perfect ripeness, allowing the wine to show the classic flavours and aromas that the wine is known for.

Viticulturalist: Gareth Goodsir
Vine Age: Planted in 2007
Irrigation: Monitored daily with soil moisture probes
Nutrition: Seaweed, compost and mulching

Winemaker: Natalie Christensen

Winemaking Analysis: Alc 12.5% pH 3.28 TA 7.48 RS 2.8g/l

The carefully harvested fruit from our S1 block was de-stemmed, chilled and gently pressed. The juice was cold settled for 72 hours, after which the clear juice was racked off. A long, cool fermentation with a specialist Sauvignon Blanc yeast followed to capture and enhance the distinctive fruit flavours created by the S1 block. Once fermentation was complete, the wine was racked, stabilised and filtered before bottling.

Product Reviews

The Wine Advocate
Robert Parker 21 January 2015

Delicate notes of white blossoms and green apples with hints of wet pebbles and coriander seed. Pretty and elegant on the palate, it has approachable acidity and mineral flavors on the long finish. 91 Points.

The Telegraph
Victoria Moore 8 April 2015

If you’re looking for a sauvignon blanc that’s as tense as a tightly coiled spring, which will tickle your nostrils like cordite, then the new vintage of S1 is for you. Made by Yealands Estate in the Awatere Valley in Marlborough, it’s utterly pin-sharp and alert, all grass, green tomatoes and piercing citrus, with a whiff of cap gun. Stimulating stuff.

"A great Sauvignon from the Awatere Valley. Very expressive, fragrant slightly floral nose with herbal aromas. Striking acidity on the palate with a fresh finish. A thrilling wine!"
