The 2017 vintage was another great one for Chardonnay in Hawke’s Bay. A moderate spring with low frost risk and good flowering led into an extremely dry and warm summer. Above average temperatures were recorded in January and February, which set the vines up well. Some late rains alleviated the drought pressure brought about by the hot summer. The 2017 Chardonnay was sourced from a range of Hawke’s Bay vineyards in the Korokipo, Crownthorpe, Bridge Pa, Clive and Mangatahi sub  regions of Hawke’s Bay. These vineyards are characterised by moderate temperatures and free draining soils, perfect for producing high quality fruit. This Chardonnay exhibits guava, citrus and stone fruit flavours combined seamlessly with subtle toasty oak. The palate is vibrant and textural with lees complexity, subtle oak and an elegant finish.

The fruit was gently picked and pressed to give fine fresh juices with a soft texture. The batches were kept separate and fermented with a range of vessels, temperatures and yeast strains to give complexity of aroma and mouth feel. After aging on full yeast lees with regular stirring the batches were blended and prepared for bottling.

Product Reviews

Colin Ford 1 July 2014

With its mid-yellow hue, this wine shows nice nutty-citrus fruit characters on the nose. In the mouth, the lemony, peach-apricot flavours work really well. There's a nice creamy texture to the mid-palate with some oak toast on the finish. Pretty well done - great value!

Sam Kim 10 November 2013

"Friendly and lively, the inviting bouquet shows peach, citrus and floral aromas, followed by a ripe and rounded palate that's shows lovely fruit intensity, backed by nicely integrated acidity. Smooth and lingering. At its best: now to 2016."

“Peter Yealands is one of the more mainstream labels and is often seen in supermarkets, but as yet, Chardonnay has not featured very prominently in the Yealands portfolio. This is set to change with this just released wine that represents terrific value. Winemaker Tamra Washington has created a mellow wine that is brimming with peach, apricot and melon flavours that are soft and juicy. This clean fresh style makes it the perfect accompaniment to chicken and salmon.”
