VITICULTURE
2015 was another great season in Hawke’s Bay, a combination of dry weather, warm days and cool nights gave ideal ripening conditions for all varieties. Through the growing season our Elms Vineyard on the Gimblett Gravels was micromanaged with very early crop regulation to one bunch per shoot and leaf removal in the fruit zone. Due to this careful viticulture we were able to achieve very even ripeness across the vineyard.

WINEMAKING COMMENTS
In early April we harvested the clean and ripe Syrah from our Elms vineyard. After de-stemming, the fruit was fermented in small stainless steel fermenters using a mixture of hand plunging and pump over techniques for cap management. After post ferment maceration on skins, the batches were run to French barriques, 20% of which were new. The wine remained in barrel for fourteen months with regular topping, with only some being racked once after malolactic fermentation. The wine was then bottled after a light filtration.

Fabulous bouquet of ripe, sweet red and black fruits; sweet meats and kid leather; a vibrant and youthful package of aromas - centering on the core of fruit. On the palate - dry with lots of texture from the tannins; loads of red and black fruit flavors, some peppery moments, but not too many; youthful yet complex; juicy and long. A wine to decant, cellar or just enjoy. remarkably good! 5 Stars (92 Points)

Very dark, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour with youthful purple hues on rim. This is elegantly concentrated with aromas of ripe blackberry fruit and black pepper, along with gentle layers of spices, iron-earth and violetty perfumes, revealing toasty oak notes in the glass. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly proportioned with restrained, but succulent and sweetly ripe flavours of ripe dark red and black berry fruits, layered with Asian spices, dark-red and violet florals and toasty oak. The fruit is supported by supple, fine-grained tannins and the wine flows effortlessly and with fresh acid vitality. The mouthfeel is softly textured, the extraction and depth growing in presence, carrying to a long spice and toasty finish. This is an elegant, finely concentrated, restrained black fruited Syrah with toasty oak seasoning. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-8 years. A selection of the best 16 barrels. 100% Syrah from the ‘Elms’ vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 25% new French oak barriques. 5 Stars

"Enticing, with intense perfumed blackberry, black olive and smoke aromas. The rich and juicy palate has lashings of generous, spicy plum and dark berry fruit – supple-textured with appealing sweetness and a hint of violets. Excellent."
