This small batch of Merlot was sourced from our Kereru Road vineyard in Mangatahi, Hawke’s Bay. The Kereru vineyard is a warm free draining site with naturally balanced vines. A smaller portion of Cabernet Sauvignon came from our Mere Road vineyard. Early crop regulation to one bunch per shoot, with 100% leaf removal in the fruit zone, ensured even ripeness. 2013 was an outstanding red vintage in Hawke’s Bay, a dry temperate growing season was followed by a beautiful warm late autumn.
The fruit was carefully handpicked and de-stemmed directly to a small open top fermenter, where the cap was gently plunged. After extended post ferment maceration the wine was run to barriques where it underwent malolactic fermentation. After racking the wine was aged in French oak barriques for 14 months before the blend was assembled for bottling, with no prior fining.
WINE AND FOOD
Ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and plum flavours are supported by complex spicy oak from extended barrel aging. The palate is rich and supple with smooth tannins and a long finish.
Excellent match to roasted New Zealand grass fed lamb or beef.
