Having sheep graze in the vineyard cuts down on energy intensive mowing, but has its pitfalls once the vines grow and the grapes emerge. Yealands Estate, a Marlborough winery that’s renowned for environmentally sustainable initiatives, has come up with an all-season solution. Our flock of Babydoll miniature sheep stand barely two feet tall. Too short to reach the fruit, these pint-sized organic-weeders provide year round mowing and pest control, plus a handy dose of fertiliser. Nurtured from the ground up with sustainable practices and produced in a carboNZero certified winery, the pure and intense flavours of Babydoll reflect the winery’s innovative thinking in tune with the environment.

Harvest Date: 2nd April– 19th April 2017

Vineyard
Marlborough experienced a mild-to-cool spring period, which ensured that the vines naturally produced lighter than average yields. These mild temperatures then extended into the summer months, coupled with an unseasonal period of rain, which ultimately alleviated the drought conditions we had experienced over the past two years. Our Babydoll Pinot Noir was harvested in excellent condition and the resulting wine is showing the wonderful characters that Marlborough is known for – heady berry fruit aromas balanced with earthy, savoury notes. 

Winemaking
The low yielding vines were harvested at optimal ripeness. The fruit was cold soaked for 5 days before being warmed and inoculated with selected yeasts to enhance varietal character. A fast, hot fermentation proceeded with regular hand plunging to craft a wine with elegance and balance. After primary fermentation was complete the parcels were gently pressed off. The wine was aged in a variety of vessels with a portion going to a mixture of new and older French oak barrels to complete spring malolactic fermentation. After 9 months of aging, the wine was blended, stabilised and filtered prior to bottling

Winemaker Tasting Notes
This Pinot Noir shows heady aromas of boysenberry and cassis with notes of cedar and mocha on the nose. The palate is supple with juicy fruit weight, fine tannins and a subtle toasty finish. Enjoy on its own, or match with duck, lamb, venison and veal dishes.
